DUES F.A.Q.
1) Why am I getting all these union emails?
You may be receiving a lot of union emails because the university
administration has reported to the union that you are classified
as a GA or DA with teaching duties (generally, an Instructor
of Record or a teaching assistant). If this is not correct,
or you are unsure of your status, you should contact your
employing department as soon as possible.
2) Do I have to pay dues to the union?
If you have received a GA or DA appointment with teaching
duties, you belong to the unit represented by the union, you
therefore must pay dues. This is true despite any contract
you may have signed with your department. The TAU-WMU agreement
for 2007-8, 2008-9 supersedes such contracts where they contradict
and a meaningful compromise cannot be reached.
3) Do I have to be a member of the union?
You do not have to be a member of the union and you do not
have to participate in it at all. If you are in the GA/DA
teaching unit, regardless of membership status, the union
is still responsible for enforcing the contract on your behalf
and you are still responsible for paying your dues.
4) Do I have to pay through automatic deductions?
No. You may pay your dues in one lump sum or in whatever
increments over the course of the semester, but you must pay
your dues. If you choose not to have dues automatically deducted
from your paycheck, you must make written arrangements with
the union for payment or dues will be deducted automatically
after written notification to both you and your department.
5) How much are dues?
The dues amounts are based on the base salary negotiated
in the contract for this year, and not on the actual amount
you are receiving (although, if you are not receiving the
base amount, please contact us, as the base amounts are minimums.)
Thus, for members the dues are 1.4% of your pay, and for non-members,
the rate is 1.36%. The following table is based on full-time
status, if you are ¾ or ½ time, adjust per you
hourly rate.
